Description

I know, i know...where the hell have i been!! Well, for one, i can tell you ive been working my ass off at college. Cant believe i found some free time to finish this piece of work!

Took about 10 hours in photoshop to complete.

Yes, i know what your saying....Yawn, its another elf! Oh! and how original...its Legolas! lol!!
This is for my girlfriends little brothers birthday present if you have to know. Usually, i prefer to draw things from real life, but in this instance....i couldent get Orlando Bloom round for dinner! Oh well, guess an image off the internet will have to do. :)

From a learning point of view, i feel i have learned a lot from working on this piece....its not easy making skin look reall, and that hair!! (thankyou WIP girls who helped me with hair tutorials!!) :)

Im not one of those tracers who trace round the eyes and nose etc. Cant learn anything that way and its much more rewarding in the end! Trust me!

Well, hope you like it guys and girls! As allwas, keep up the class A work!!!

PS : Someone said something about his right eye being too big compared to his left eye. Ive looked over the photo a few times and it seems to me thats just the way Orlando looks in the pic....what do you think?? :)

I saw this in the WIP forum, nice job overall! Especially the hair.

I love this! Absolutely beautiful, and not only that but Orlando Bloom is so hot and sexy. Great job! +infinity

Avatar Crow

it's nicely textured and has great lighting. Still, it's somehow wrong - proportions are a miss :(

Chin and forehead are much skewed to left, ear might be a bit misplaced, it's too low. (though I'm not sure, ears vary quite a lot).

About the eye, don't trust photographs! Lens distortion causes really strange problems to anatomy (like hands always seem too big), so in something like eye placement, you should trust your own knowledge of anatomy rather than some random photograph.

Construct the head before you paint it, you avoid lot of anatomical problems that way.

I've been waiting for him to give my 10++++++++++++++++++++++++++++!!!
Honestly,I've seen many Legolases and when I read the name of the topic I didn't feel any excitement:) But when I saw THIS...Man,it's the best Legolas I've ever seen, maybe even better than the real one You succeded on hear 100%! As I've already said the skin texture is wonderful and the light's great too
You succeded to cetch his unic face expression! It's a brilliant portreit

BTW I don't have any problems with proportions, even if geometrically they are not completely right, comon, he's alive!! And I don't see such a rude mistakes that would seem unnatural

Quote SD: "Yes, i know what your saying....Yawn, its another elf! Oh! and how original...its Legolas! lol!!"

Yes, indeed. But the way you painted it technically is absolutely fantastic!

waste of time...
it dont makes any sense to copy something 1:1 that allready exists.

Avatar SeanyD

 04/09/05 @509

Thanks everybody for your nice comments so far! :) Apreciate them!

Uncle Xen : read the description mate, i said its for my girlfriends little brother as a birthday present. How else am i meant to give him a painting of legolass without copying exactly? Shall i just give Orlando a call to pop round for tea and crumpets. lol!

Artoonator : wow, i thought illd get a arenhous type comment from you! Surprised me! Thanks buddy!! :)

Crow : maybe the proportions are a miss but if they look correct in a photograph and no one really complains about the photograph, its a desktop wallpaper after all then im just going to copy it how i see it because it works.

Thankyou again everybody....(sorry, bad nights sleep) :)
Sorry if i seem rude.

Avatar Crow

 04/09/05 @534

okay, checked out the photo. There was tiny bit of lens distortion in that photo, but it seems like you at least doubled the amount of distortion to your painting O.O

Avatar SeanyD

 04/09/05 @536

Okey well, as long as it feels like ive captured Legolas then to me, thats what i set out to do. Thankyou. :)

Avatar Crow

 04/09/05 @537

and no, you shouldn't copy photos. What is the point? I know you can't get Orlando Bloom to pose for you. Why don't you get lot of photos so you can understand the head? After that you could draw it in any pose and from any angle.. I know it's a bit more difficult than just copying, but definately pays off. At least if you do copy, you should still fix the errors of the photograph.

Avatar panda89

 04/09/05 @549

hmm nah, it's not that pointless.
it's good to practice drawing.

 04/09/05 @554

Thanks for the advice Crow. Like i said before if the photo captures his likeness which it does...then i will use that photo. Hey, just be glad im truthfull and at least give a photo and not just say i looked at lots of photos and made his heaad up.LOL

Avatar SeanyD

 04/09/05 @567

Sorry, i think this is turning into a forum! LOL! :)

Another thing : A photo is just a photo, but when its turned into a piece of art...its much more. :)

(not aying all photos are just photos!! some are works of art in themselves!)
Thankyou :)

Avatar SeanyD

 04/09/05 @570

And another thing ;

Ive seen plenty of self portraits on here that are taken from photos. If its wrong to copy from an image off the internet is it also wrong to copy one you took yourself??

lol, sorry again for so many comments but it just bugs me. I know it shouldent but it does in this case, and thankyou for crits and nice words! :)

Avatar uncle-xeN

 04/09/05 @626

"How else am i meant to give him a painting of legolass without copying exactly?"

yeah its the shocking truth -> legolas=orlando

i just wonder how all those lotr artists did their pics years before the movies came out... without any boring photos to copy from. scary ....

Avatar SeanyD

 04/09/05 @629

Well im sure they came up with all kinds of versions...unfortunately i couldent have that freedom. Doh!

Avatar Socalbmx

Well first let me say, that I kind of don't like drawing pictures that already exist, BUT this looks incredibly awesome ;D
*claps hands* Therefore 9 points - for the amazing technique (the texturing blows me away). Do the same with a made up pic and it's surely a 10 :p
Great work all around!!

 04/10/05 @019

Man this place cracks me up!!!!!......some of you should re-read your own comments and try and see how ridiculously pompous you sound!!!...lighten up for gawds sake...it's JUST a painting!!!

Technically this is excellent Sean...and I hope your girlfriend's bro gets much enjoyment from it...I'm more of an Orc man meself!!! :)

Avatar DigitalDust

 04/10/05 @045

Does smack of narcissism, don't it!!!

I wonder how much Sean got paid, or if it was simply a nice gesture on his part (as a gift) that should warrant "hours and hours" of reference gathering, studying angles and drawing to perfection just to satisfy some prerequisites a few here have in order to meet the standards of what they "think" art should be...

Sean, it is what it is, and that's fine with me... and will gladly put you at the 200 pt. mark with my vote!

Avatar EmmaLB

 04/10/05 @495

yeah! It's finished! Hair looks great :) and as I said before - great skin texture!
plus we all like Legolas, don't we? hehehehe

Avatar heidorn

 04/10/05 @528

Pfff, as if painting a portrait from photo reference was easy! 8o Art is a subjective thing. It's what YOU want it to be and not what a limited number of so-called 'elites' think it should be. I realize it must bother some of them that artworks that aren't worthy of their time make it to the top 10. But it's a popular vote, so they should back off. |(
You've done a great job my friend and you've obviously put a lot of work into this. It may be Legolas/O.Bloom and I admit I'm also pretty tired of seeing his face plastered all over the place but the the subject of your painting doesn't diminish the technical expertise with which you painted it. I hope your girlfriend's little brother likes it as much as I do. :)

Avatar SeanyD

 04/10/05 @537

man........ im lost for words! I was half expecting to wake up to more grief for copying a picture but...wow. Thankyou! It really means a lot to me that some of you love this painting.....Your the best!!

Oh and of course i never got any money from this!! :) its for her little brother (hes like 9 years old) and to be honest none of my work has recieved any money....Im sure soon enough i will be charging! hehe

Again, thankyou for everyones very hearty comments!!!!!!!! :)

PS : Girls, i hope your not giving me high points because its Orlando Bloom! :) Try to look past the star and more into the hours of technical painting i put into it. ;) Cheers!!

Ok...

First: My jaw dropped...five feet below! Really.

And I don't think that there's something wrong with the proportions or angle blablabla because it's loyal to the original photograph, we are all aware that lightning plus zome type of lens can distort and change faces/bodies.

Perfect

 04/16/05 @251

Hello SeanyD, here are my crits. I think his face is a bit stretched out vertically. Also you don't have to put all the unsightly marks (like pimples) on his portrait. My former illustration lecturer always told me that when doing someone's portrait, make that person look more beautiful/handsome/perfect on purpose. That's probably why some people hire portrait artists instead of just going to a photography studio LOL.

Avatar SeanyD

 04/16/05 @565

Thankyou jeromoo. Yes a few people have said his face looks a little stretched and i agree. To be honest i think Orlando Bloom looks to girly so i thought illd make his skin a tad bit more rough looking. lol haha

Thanks!

so frigin what? its from a photo. the image still goes through your eye, to your brain, and rearanged by hand with whichever medium used.....therefore in a sense it is uniquely yours. But most importantly you apparently were not paid for the piece so you can do as you wish. I don't believe rendering an object from a photo, life or imagination can ever be considered a waist of time. And now i exhale...ahhhhhhhh...
Super rad piece!

Ok, I admit it - your Orlando is better than mine :) I think you succeeded where I failed and that is with better contrast on the face. I love the lighting. I bet you are thinking that if all these people think that replicating a photo is so easy and so worthless why did it take so much time and work?! Well that is what I think anyway.

Excellent - I would give you 10 points but .... I can only give up to 9.

look at this!!! a exact copy of mr. Bloom ( though I am not a big fan of his so called drop-dead-gorgeous- look, according to me he's just an actor..) I like this piece of work!! I know it is difficult to make a portrait which actually looks like the person too :p....very well done!!!

Avatar landeroc

 06/03/06 @628

WOW! this is very well done. Amazing work! I took the time to read some of the critics here and I must say that I do not agree with some, specially uncle-xeN. I believe this is a PORTRAIT. Don't you think? Portraits exist and is when you paint an existing being not something that doesn't exist. Understand what I mean? Plus, many people paint portraits...so, what's wrong with that?
You accomplished this very good, you really did an incredible job. People should know that making a portrait and making it look exactly like the person is a very difficult task. So congratulations, my max vote for you! (thumbup)

Avatar Sirielle

 01/09/07 @812

Very nice portrait. :) Even given that I hate movie elves and especially their ears. Or to be precise I don' treat them as real elves of Tolkien's universe, but that has got nothing to do with your painting. Nitpicker in me insisted to tell you that movie Legolas had blue eyes, just Orlando didn't always remember to wear contact lenses ;) His waste. But it's also rather side remark, forgive me. You may give him any eye colour you like. I'm just a freak every time I meet elves from Arda ;)

Coming back to the painting itself - great hair, skin texture and lightning. Very good job! :)

Avatar Sirielle

 01/09/07 @816

*just browsing what said others*

"PS : Girls, i hope your not giving me high points because its Orlando Bloom! :) Try to look past the star and more into the hours of technical painting i put into it. ;) Cheers!!"

No way, I gave you 7 for the skill and detailed rendition, using him as elf would give you minus if that was counting. I get rash seeing Leg-Orli everywhere ;>

Concerning your question about eye - maybe it's because this is less visible on photos out of camera lens distortions, but the further eye always should be smaller in 3/4 profile. Something I just learned myself, I'm still learning. Though nothing bothers me on your image.
