Description
I know, i know...where the hell have i been!! Well, for one, i can tell you ive been working my ass off at college. Cant believe i found some free time to finish this piece of work!Took about 10 hours in photoshop to complete.
Yes, i know what your saying....Yawn, its another elf! Oh! and how original...its Legolas! lol!!
This is for my girlfriends little brothers birthday present if you have to know. Usually, i prefer to draw things from real life, but in this instance....i couldent get Orlando Bloom round for dinner! Oh well, guess an image off the internet will have to do.
From a learning point of view, i feel i have learned a lot from working on this piece....its not easy making skin look reall, and that hair!! (thankyou WIP girls who helped me with hair tutorials!!)
Im not one of those tracers who trace round the eyes and nose etc. Cant learn anything that way and its much more rewarding in the end! Trust me!
Well, hope you like it guys and girls! As allwas, keep up the class A work!!!

PS : Someone said something about his right eye being too big compared to his left eye. Ive looked over the photo a few times and it seems to me thats just the way Orlando looks in the pic....what do you think??

Chin and forehead are much skewed to left, ear might be a bit misplaced, it's too low. (though I'm not sure, ears vary quite a lot).
About the eye, don't trust photographs! Lens distortion causes really strange problems to anatomy (like hands always seem too big), so in something like eye placement, you should trust your own knowledge of anatomy rather than some random photograph.
Construct the head before you paint it, you avoid lot of anatomical problems that way.

Honestly,I've seen many Legolases and when I read the name of the topic I didn't feel any excitement
You succeded to cetch his unic face expression! It's a brilliant portreit
BTW I don't have any problems with proportions, even if geometrically they are not completely right, comon, he's alive!! And I don't see such a rude mistakes that would seem unnatural

Works...
Very realistic!
04/09/05 @375
Yes, indeed. But the way you painted it technically is absolutely fantastic!
04/09/05 @431
it dont makes any sense to copy something 1:1 that allready exists.

Uncle Xen : read the description mate, i said its for my girlfriends little brother as a birthday present. How else am i meant to give him a painting of legolass without copying exactly? Shall i just give Orlando a call to pop round for tea and crumpets. lol!
Artoonator : wow, i thought illd get a arenhous type comment from you! Surprised me! Thanks buddy!!
Crow : maybe the proportions are a miss but if they look correct in a photograph and no one really complains about the photograph, its a desktop wallpaper after all then im just going to copy it how i see it because it works.
Thankyou again everybody....(sorry, bad nights sleep)
Sorry if i seem rude.

Another thing : A photo is just a photo, but when its turned into a piece of art...its much more.
(not aying all photos are just photos!! some are works of art in themselves!)
Thankyou
04/09/05 @570
Ive seen plenty of self portraits on here that are taken from photos. If its wrong to copy from an image off the internet is it also wrong to copy one you took yourself??
lol, sorry again for so many comments but it just bugs me. I know it shouldent but it does in this case, and thankyou for crits and nice words!
04/09/05 @626
yeah its the shocking truth -> legolas=orlando
i just wonder how all those lotr artists did their pics years before the movies came out... without any boring photos to copy from. scary ....
04/09/05 @629
04/09/05 @672
Respect that, even if there are 5000000 other legolas paintings.

*claps hands* Therefore 9 points - for the amazing technique (the texturing blows me away). Do the same with a made up pic and it's surely a 10
Great work all around!!
04/10/05 @019
Technically this is excellent Sean...and I hope your girlfriend's bro gets much enjoyment from it...I'm more of an Orc man meself!!!
04/10/05 @045
I wonder how much Sean got paid, or if it was simply a nice gesture on his part (as a gift) that should warrant "hours and hours" of reference gathering, studying angles and drawing to perfection just to satisfy some prerequisites a few here have in order to meet the standards of what they "think" art should be...
Sean, it is what it is, and that's fine with me... and will gladly put you at the 200 pt. mark with my vote!
04/10/05 @495
plus we all like Legolas, don't we? hehehehe
04/10/05 @528
You've done a great job my friend and you've obviously put a lot of work into this. It may be Legolas/O.Bloom and I admit I'm also pretty tired of seeing his face plastered all over the place but the the subject of your painting doesn't diminish the technical expertise with which you painted it. I hope your girlfriend's little brother likes it as much as I do.
04/10/05 @537
Oh and of course i never got any money from this!!
Again, thankyou for everyones very hearty comments!!!!!!!!
PS : Girls, i hope your not giving me high points because its Orlando Bloom!

First: My jaw dropped...five feet below! Really.
And I don't think that there's something wrong with the proportions or angle blablabla because it's loyal to the original photograph, we are all aware that lightning plus zome type of lens can distort and change faces/bodies.
Perfect

You accomplished this very good, you really did an incredible job. People should know that making a portrait and making it look exactly like the person is a very difficult task. So congratulations, my max vote for you!

Going to give you my max because this is an amazing painting - I don't like Orlando ^-^
01/09/07 @812
Coming back to the painting itself - great hair, skin texture and lightning. Very good job!
01/09/07 @816
"PS : Girls, i hope your not giving me high points because its Orlando Bloom!
No way, I gave you 7 for the skill and detailed rendition, using him as elf would give you minus if that was counting. I get rash seeing Leg-Orli everywhere ;>
Concerning your question about eye - maybe it's because this is less visible on photos out of camera lens distortions, but the further eye always should be smaller in 3/4 profile. Something I just learned myself, I'm still learning. Though nothing bothers me on your image.
